on valmistunut eläinlääkäriksi ja väitellyt tohtoriksi Glasgown yliopistosta, Iso-Britanniassa. Hän on työskennellyt tieteellisen tutkimuksen parissa Alankomaissa ja Kanadassa ennen muuttoa Yhdysvaltoihin 1997. Hänen tutkimuksiaan on julkaistu monissa tieteellisissä lehdissä ja hän on kirjoittanut useita kirjoja.
Hilary Clayton haluaa tarjota tieteellisen näkökulman useasta suunnasta ja tuoda tutkittua tietoa eläinlääketieteen ja ratsastuksen vuorovaikutuksesta, erityisesti ontumien ehkäisemiseen ja kuntoutukseen. Hänen erityisosaamisensa on ratsun ja ratsastajan keskenäisessä vuorovaikutuksessa ja biomekaniikassa.
Hilary Clayton on ratsastanut koko elämänsä ja kilpaillut sekä esteratsastuksessa että kenttäratsastuksessa. Aktiivisesti hän toimii kouluratsastuksen parissa jossa hän kouluttaa ratsuja, valmentaa ja kilpailee GP tasolla. Hän on Yhdysvaltojen koulu-ratsastusyhdistyksen (USDF) pronssi-, hopea- ja kultamitalisti.

This talk introduces the role of biomechanics in equestrian sports. Through understanding the basic principles of biomechanics, the trainer or rider can evaluate the horse’s movements from a different perspective and with better understanding of the possibilities and problems facing the athletic horse.

This session will describe the evaluation of horses and riders from a biomechanical perspective. It will include practical sessions watching the performance of a variety of horses. There will be opportunities to ask questions and see the results of training corrections.

How the Tack Affects the Horse and Rider
The tack forms the interface between rider and horse providing comfort, security and a means of communication with the horse. This talk will describe research on saddles, bridles and bits including how they fit the horse, where pressure is applied to the horse’s body, and how the rider’s aids are transmitted via the tack to the horse. The information can be applied to select appropriate equipment and to understand how to give clear and effective aids.

Causes and Effects of Asymmetry
Straightness is one of the steps on the training pyramid and trainers invest considerable time and effort in making their horses straight. This talk looks at the reasons why horses move asymmetrically and how the different causes of asymmetry affect their movement patterns. The differences in asymmetries due to lameness versus sidedness (handedness) will be described, together with the possible effects of sidedness on performance.
